Description

Our focus will be manure management practices that maximize the benefits of manure to soils and crops while minimizing the hazards to air and water quality and complying with regulations.

The class will be taught in the Fall semester every other year. Next class will be in Fall 2006.

Overall Learning Objectives

  1. Students will be able to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of manure management practices at livestock and equine operations and make recommendations for improvement.
  2. Students will be able to develop a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan (CNMP) for an animal feeding operation including nutritional, agronomic, and some engineering components.
  3. Students will be able to analyze tradeoffs among environmental hazards and local and global impacts of manure management practices.

Method of Evaluation

The lab portion of the class will focus on the facets and development of a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan including at least three site visits. Students will work in groups of 2-3 on development of a Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan for a local animal feeding operation.
