| Suggested procedures for sending water samples to the Colorado State University Soil, Water and Plant Testing Laboratory: |
| - Sample containers should be plastic with a cap that can be securely fastened. The lab needs 4-6 oz. of water for analysis. |
| Glass Containers with metal tops should have a piece of plastic wrap placed between the container and the top. |
| Please do not use glass containers when mailing sample(s) to the lab. |
| - Containers should be clean and then rinsed with the sample itself prior to taking the sample. |
| - Containers should be filled with sample as much to the top as possible. |
| - Label the Sample with a permanent marker. If the container cannot be marked directly, place a piece of masking tape |
| on the bottle and mark it instead. |
| - Keep the sample cool preferably in a refrigerator. DO NOT FREEZE THE SAMPLE. |
| -Place the information sheet with the sample. It may be best to put the information sheet in a plastic bag to prevent it from |
| getting soaked by a leaky sample container. |
| - Bring or send the sample as soon as possible to the CSU Soil, Water and Plant Testing Lab (see above address). |
| If the sample is being mailed, refrigerate it prior to sending. |
| Then pack it securely with newspapers or styrofoam (be sure cap is tight) in a box for mailing. |
| - Send the samples on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Samples sent late Wednesday or Thursday |
| may not get to the lab by Friday and could sit in Central Receiving over the weekend. |
- the lab does not test for microorganisms (i.e., bacteria), pesticides or herbicides. |
| Points to remember are: |
| - keep lids on tight |
| - mark bottle clearly |
| - be sure information stays together |
| - please include your phone number in case we need to contact you |
